Position Statement: Advocacy on Road Safety Initiatives
Overview
The Australian Driver Trainers Association acknowledges the importance of advocating for improvements in road safety and supports evidence-based initiatives that align with national standards, including Austroads guidelines and Fitness to Drive assessments.
While the ADTA is committed to promoting best practices within the driving instruction industry, our current focus is on providing informed recommendations through position statements rather than direct lobbying or financial investment.
Our Commitment
The ADTA is committed to supporting initiatives that:
- Enhance driver safety and competency through effective training programs.
- Promote national consistency in driver training and assessments, in line with Austroads recommendations.
- Align with principles of the Fitness to Drive framework, ensuring drivers meet the appropriate standards for safe road participation.
Support without Lobbying
The ADTA believes in creating position statements that articulate its stance on key industry issues. These statements serve as a resource for stakeholders, including government bodies, industry representatives, and the broader community, without requiring the organisation to engage in costly lobbying efforts.
As such:
- Provide written support for aligned road safety initiatives
- Offer subject-matter expertise on driver training when appropriate
- Prioritise resources for member services and internal projects
Focus Areas
The ADTA’s position statements and advocacy efforts will emphasise:
- Fitness to Drive: Supporting research and practical applications of Fitness to Drive standards to ensure road safety.
- Austroads Alignment: Advocating for national consistency in driver training policies and regulations.
- Collaborative Partnerships: Encouraging collaboration with relevant authorities and industry bodies to develop practical, sustainable solutions.
Position Statment Conclusion
While the ADTA cannot commit financial or lobbying resources for every request, it remains dedicated to fostering positive change through strategic partnerships and well-informed position statements. The association will continue to advocate for initiatives that improve driver safety and training outcomes within the scope of its capabilities.
